Evacuation & First Aid

Knowledge of your workplace, the building and escape routes can be crucial in an emergency. Below you will find important information for your safety and that of others. Study the evacuation plans posted at strategic locations in the building and the material below. Everyone is obligated to become familiar with the evacuation plans at Polacksbacken Campus.

During an evacuation alarm – leave immediately through the nearest emergency exit

  • If possible, bring along outerwear/shoes
  • Warn others
  • Check to see if anyone needs help
  • If possible, close doors and windows
  • Follow the evacuation sign to the nearest exit
  • Do not use the lift – take the stairs
  • Go to your assembly point

The evacuation plan showing emergency evacuation routes and assembly points is posted in all premises on Campus Polacksbacken. Buildings/zones where the evacuation alarm does not sound need not be evacuated. Do not stop immediately outside exterior doors, but go to your assembly point. Avoid blocking the road for rescue vehicles.

After an evacuation alarm – pay attention

Do not go back into premises where evacuation alarms continue to sound. If an alarm is turned off, that does not necessarily mean it is safe to return. So pay attention to any information from emergency personnel. Do not enter the property if it could pose any danger.

Evacuation plans – which route is closest to you?

Evacuation plans are posted in the stairwells. They contain information on what to do in case of fire and on recommended escape routes.

Evacuation alarm – what does an alarm sound like?

Evacuation drills

Evacuation drills take place every other year as determined by the Vice-Chancellor. Read about the procedures for evacuation drills on Campus Polacksbacken here.

The fire alarm is connected to the rescue service. It is triggered automatically by smoke detectors and sprinkler systems or manually by alarm buttons. The alarm controls various security functions, such as shutting off the gas supply in Ångström Laboratory, closing fire-resistant doors, returning lifts to the entrance level, opening doors with card readers and more.

Each department/unit has appointed a fire safety officer. Fire safety officers are tasked with keeping a watchful eye on fire prevention efforts in their units. Information about systematic fire safety work at the University and contact information to your fire safety officer can be found in the Employee Portal.

Sprinkler Systems

Most spaces in Ångström Laboratory and Building 6 at the Information Technology Centre have water sprinklers triggered locally by heat from a fire. Activation of a sprinkler also triggers the automatic fire alarm and the evacuation alarm in the affected building.

Fire Extinguishers

Hand-held fire extinguishers have been placed in every corridor on Campus Polacksbacken. These are also indicated on the evacuation boards in the corridor. Memorise the location of these fire extinguishers so you can quickly pick one up if needed.

  • SAVE those in immediate danger
  • CALL fire rescue by pressing the fire alarm button or calling 112
  • – where the fire is
    – what is on fire
    – who will call 112
    – if anyone is trapped
  • EXTINGUISH the fire, if possible
  • TURN OFF gas taps
  • EVACUATE the premises

Defibrillators are easy to use and can be used by anyone. Audio instructions (in Swedish) are given when the lid is opened.

At the Information Technology Centre, there are defibrillators in the corridor on floor 2, Building 4, next to the lift.

Defibrillators are available at Ångström Laboratory:
– in room 1011 (outside the service desk for keys and access cards)
– in the Ångström Library.

First aid kits with bandages, patches, wipes, etc. can be found at several places on Campus Polacksbacken. At Ångström Laboratory, these kits are located in several places, including by the service desk for keys and access cards.

At the Information Technology Centre, there are first aid kits:
– in room 1232 (storage room)
– in room 2203
– in room 4213 (IT office room; ask staff for help).
